Home Comfort/Home Energy Efficiency Assessment

   EnergyMen's core building science service is the place to start! We identify all the potential sources of high energy consumption, health and comfort issues and potential safety hazards. We use state of the art tools and equipment like blower door testing, infrared thermography, gas analyzer probes and much more. These tools help identify such issues as air leaks, missing or defective insulation, excessive moisture, ventilation issues, gas leakage, old or inefficient appliances and lighting. We also include a customized, comprehensive report with cost effective recommendations together with our initial consultation.

Air Sealing

   Often felt but seldom seen, air leakage is a common problem for most homes. It is responsible for many issues like drafty rooms, excessive dust, insect and other pest infestations, and most importantly, stealing the expensive heated and cooled air you have paid the utility for. EnergyMen uses our diagnostic equipment to locate and seal cracks, holes, crevices and other penetrations in your homes interior and exterior. Please see common air leaks diagram in our FAQ page. This seals out the dust, bugs and noise, and keeps your comfortable, expensive air inside where it belongs.

Insulation

   Most homes suffer from a lack of insulation. (Some older homes have none! The majority of the housing stock in the U.S. - and Chicago - was built over 50 years ago) EnergyMen uses environmentally friendly blown in insulation and new, high tech foams to ensure a strong thermal barrier. These increase your comfort in summer and winter, and save energy and money every day.

Energy Efficient Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Upgrades (HVAC)

   Heating can account for more than half of a typical homes energy use, so upgrading your heating and cooling efficiency makes sense and can save money. Making sure the system is sized and installed properly is as important – for example, if EnergyMen has air sealed and insulated your home, we can often reduce the size and cost of all your HVAC appliances, reduce energy consumption, and still have your families year round comfort improved!

Basement and Crawlspace Treatments

   Installing vapor barriers, adding insulation and airsealing these often overlooked places will reduce excess moisture, condensation problems, and energy use, while providing additional comfort levels in your home. In the picture at left, an EnergyMen technician airseals and insulates a "rim joist" in a basement - this is often where cold, outside air infiltration happens in your home, without you knowing it...

Appliance Replacement

   Replacing old, inefficient cloths washers, dryers and dishwashers saves water, energy and money, and reduces noise. New refrigerators consume about 1/3 of the energy of the typical older unit, and keeps your food fresher longer. EnergyMen uses EnergyStar rated or better products exclusively. There are often programs to recycle your old appliances at no cost to you - some even pay YOU to have it done!

Hot Water Systems

   Would you keep your car running all night because you planned to use it the next morning? We didn’t think so! But that is what conventional hot water heaters do to supply your homes hot water. So stop sending your money down the drain! The new, tankless hot water heating systems produce virtually endless supplies of hot water for your families showers, clothes and dish washing and more, but only when you need it (on demand). And they use 35% less energy to do it.

Duct Sealing

   Typical ductwork in a U.S. home has leakage of 30%or more! Air escaping from your ductwork can be the cause of indoor air quality issues, comfort problems as well as increase the cost of heating and cooling your home. Ask us about the EnergyMen non-invasive duct testing and sealing technology we use to solve this troublesome issue.

Indoor Air Quality

    Most homes rely on “natural ventilation” (your home leaks, and outside air infiltrates – see home leakage graphic in our FAQ) to supply the air you and your family breathes. This is at best, unreliable, and at worst, can contribute to health issues like asthma or allergies. According to the EPA, indoor air quality is one of the biggest potential health issues families might face - every day.
Following a course of air sealing and duct sealing to reduce pollutants from entering your home, EnergyMen can design and install the right ventilation and filtration equipment to ensure your families best comfort and health.

Windows and Doors

   Surprisingly, spending money on window replacement is not usually the most cost effective way to improve your homes overall energy efficiency. Simply put, windows (and doors) are very expensive, and glass is a poor insulator. However, many homes have windows that must be replaced, due to age and deterioration, as well as air leakage issues, - beautiful, new american made energy efficient windows can add significantly to the comfort, beauty and resale value of your home.

Lighting Retrofit

   Great strides have been made in lighting recently. We can help you reduce energy consumption with new LED and CFL lighting recommendations. Recessed lights, new dimmable LED technology, many choices of lighting intensity and "color" are available, so as your EnergyMen what would work best for your particular needs.
